April

Picture
During the month of April, the second grade students will be learning about weather patterns and changes. Students will specifically come to understand that the atmosphere is made up of air and that long and short-term weather patterns can occur due to changes in energy. We will also begin planting our root vegetable garden with the Independence Garden Club.

Second graders are learning about endangered and extinct animals.  We have voted and are soon going to be symbolically adopting the polar bear, Amur leopard and the giant panda through the World Wildlife Foundation.  We will complete an endangered animal report on one of these animals in science class.

Students in second grade worked hard on creating a habitat mural for our hallway after learning about different environments in our world.  One class worked on the pond pictured at the left and the other two classes put together the woodland and stream habitat you see pictured below.

Project by Charlie
The theme in the science room this year is African Savannah animals. Second graders started the year learning about zebras and how their stripes help them survive in the African Savannah.  Second graders are now currently working on their first chapter on Environments. Students will focus on a few Ohio habitats such as streams and woodlands.  They have created a stream habitat out of clay and small rocks. Some students brought in small plastic animals which they then used in their display. We then discussed how the animals would survive in this particular habitat. We looked at where certain animals would find shelter, get food, water and air. Check out the stream models down below:
