The first grade classes have been learning about the States of Matter. We have been observing different objects and grouping them by their properties. The three states of matter are solids, liquids, and gases. The students have participated in several experiments and hands-on activities to show understanding of the three states of matter and changes. They are also working on their Menu of Matter Booklets to show understanding of the concepts learned in class.
Here are some pictures of the students participating in different activities during this unit:

November-December
The first grade classes have been learning about living and nonliving things. They have been observing living things within our classroom. We have discussed the differences between living and nonliving things. They also learned about the different needs of plants and animals, as well as, how living things meet their needs.
Students have also been learning about different animal habitats including forests, oceans, deserts and the arctic. They have discussed how animals meet their needs in each of these habitats.

First graders continued learning basic science skills by participating in different experiments. They explored magnets, used different tools to weigh objects and explored a sink or float station. For all these activities students performed steps in the scientific method where we started the day with a question, made predictions, recorded their observations in their science journals and discussed the results.
