About the Science Program
Twelve years ago there was a need for more science instruction and more individualized teaching time. A science program was created to assist both these issues. In grades 1, 2 and 3 homerooms are divided in half for this program. During scheduled science time, half of the students in a particular homeroom come to me for hands-on, student centered science activities. This half class is also combined with another half class from the same grade level. During our Science exploration the other half of the classes will be using the time for individualized reading instruction in their homerooms. After 35-45 (depending on grade level) minutes the groups will switch so that each half of the class receives the same science and reading instruction.
Students in science class explore their schoolyard, participate in naturalist visits, experiment and investigate with a hands-on approach to learning. My goal as a science teacher is to instill a love of nature and science in young students so that they can grow to respect and appreciate the world that they live in.
